…but before we “get down”, many thanks to everyone who braved the weather and showed up at the Ultra 8201 party at the Ghost Room last night…and for those who didn’t, you really missed a great vibe – definitely one to remember.
…hey, not just any Captain though – here are some rarer tracks from the bootlegs of the studio session that produced the Clear Spot and the Spotlight Kid. Kiss sounds like your standard Beefheart twist on the blues at first – but what I really love about this song is the old r&b breakdown guitar part. Love it. Then in Harry Irene, the Captain switches to a pretty jazz number that manages to escape without any odd twists – which is a miracle in and of itself. Surely this never had a chance at making one of his records, but it’s always nice to hear what musicians are playing when they think no one is listening.
….more stuff we like. How bout a video showing the intro to movie with a theme written by Basil Kirchin? Though written in 1968, this wouldn’t sound out of place on a new Stereolab or Broadcast album – two bands who I’m sure are very familiar with Basil.
