Get Down Friday Night by the Fantastic Aleems

…but before we “get down”, many thanks to everyone who braved the weather and showed up at the Ultra 8201 party at the Ghost Room last night…and for those who didn’t, you really missed a great vibe – definitely one to remember.

Our friends at Ultra8201 are celebrating their 4th Anniversary tonight at the Ghost Room. 4 years is like 15 in “internet years” so everyone should make a point to come out and celebrate and congratulate them on a job well done in covering the Austin music scene over the last several years. Of course no good Austin music blog party would be complete without Austin bands and yours truly will be hitting the stage tonight with the New Roman Times and Politics – two bands we have really enjoyed seeing over the last year.

But wait – there’s more! In between sets, the Red Boys will do a few songs. Yes, they are a couple of young kids rocking out, but it’s not novelty if it makes you dance and they will make you “shake that thang“.

…for more on the event from the Richard, check out today’s interview over on the Austinist.

Jan 28th at the Ghost Room

John drank this:

…and things seemed to work out pretty well for us.  Finishing up the last track and then we will move on to mixing in about an hour.  More updates to share soon…

By the way, if you have a “fancy phone” you can now view a special version of our homepage optimized for mobile devices.  All you have to do is scroll down to the bottom of the page(when viewing from your mobile browser) and turn the “Mobile Theme” on or off according to your preference.  Enjoy!

So 2010 will bring a lot of change for the Authors.  Some additions to the website, a few shows, maybe a few appearances during SXSW week and oh I don’t know – maybe our first full length album!  Having spent the last week recording, I can say the wait will DEFINITELY be worth it.  I’m not saying the album will be good – I’m saying it will be great.  Keep it tuned here as we release more info on the album soon like cover art, track listing, and maybe a sneak peek or two.

Okay maybe one sneak peek for now – but don’t tell ANYONE I just shared this with you:

So, here we are at the end of the year and now it’s time for arbitrary lists of things to get put up all over the internet about all sorts of stuff. Today you’ll get my personal Top Ten List of albums (and other music stuff) for 2009. In no particular order (or is there?):

Stuff that’s labeled no-fi, lo-fi, chillwave, glo-fi, and 8,000 other descriptors that describe nothing. At least some of the music is creative.

Phoenix “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”

The Drums “Summertime!” EP

Surfer Blood “Astro Coast” (not officially released yet, but hey I listened to it anyway)

The XX “XX”

Neon Indian “Psychic Chasms”

Grizzly Bear at The Parish, in Austin (killer show in the Summer of Death. Never been so hot by just standing still, but the show was truly epic. Plus, Here We Go Magic were a fantastic opener.)

Spoon at Stubb’s (My first Spoon show was off the chain as they say. Can’t believe I’d never seen them and they defiantly brought it. Highlights were the new track “Who makes you money” and the Stones cover “Rock’s Off”. Jew-Mex horns were a great addition too.)

St. Vincent “Actor” (Truly unique. Avant pop that works.)

Washed Up “Life of Leisure” EP

Jeremy Jay “Love Everlasting” single (Dope synths.)

iPhone (Made life soooooo much easier)

Dirty Projectors “Bitte Orca” (for the music critic/snob in me)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs “It’s Blitz!” (they make it big and make it work)

The Authors “EP” (Hey, it’s my first release and I’m proud! Sue me.)

Mad Men (Totally caught me off guard. I know it debuted in ‘07, but hey this is my list.)

SoundCloud (Great tool to share ideas with the band)

Cold Cave “Love Comes Close” (Never enough good New Order/Joy Division stuff, ya know?)

Mos Def “The Ecstatic” (Dope.)

…hey, not just any Captain though – here are some rarer tracks from the bootlegs of the studio session that produced the Clear Spot and the Spotlight Kid.  Kiss sounds like your standard Beefheart twist on the blues at first – but what I really love about this song is the old r&b breakdown guitar part.  Love it.  Then in Harry Irene, the Captain switches to a pretty jazz number that manages to escape without any odd twists – which is a miracle in and of itself.  Surely this never had a chance at making one of his records, but it’s always nice to hear what musicians are playing when they think no one is listening.

…just a reminder to everyone to come see us next Wednesday, November 18th at the Scoot Inn at 11pm.  We play with Legs Against Arms and Milk Thistle(two bands I’m anxious to hear) in an Above the Radar Productions event.  Just to make it official, Justin even pulled together another boss poster to mark the occasion.  See you all soon!

The Authors at 11pm on Wed. Nov 18th at the Scott Inn

….more stuff we like. How bout a video showing the intro to movie with a theme written by Basil Kirchin?  Though written in 1968, this wouldn’t sound out of place on a new Stereolab or Broadcast album – two bands who I’m sure are very familiar with Basil.

Basil Kirchin – Theme to “The Strange Affair”
